Leading street artists have come together to commence the ‘Brandalism’ project, the biggest ‘subvertising’ campaign in UK history.
Rebelling against what they see as the excessive influence of advertising, and sparked by the strict enforcement of branding regulations in advance of the London Olympics, 25 artists from 8 countries have begun ‘guerilla installations’ in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and London, putting their own images over advertising billboards.
One of them, Bill Posters, has previous form, having created the image of Wayne Rooney carrying shopping bags, with the slogan “Just Loot It” in the wake of the riots of last summer.
The centrepiece is undoubtedly the poster describing the list of banned Olympic-associated words and phrases (which is completely accurate), but all of them have their point to make. Together, they aim to “challenge the destructive impacts of the advertising industry” and “take back our visual landscapes”.
