A teacher is facing up to 186 years in jail after being accused of having sex with one of her 16-year-old students.
Shannon Cardinal, who is in the process of getting divorced, is alleged to have travelled to the teen’s home out of state where they had sex when his parents were out.
The teen told police they did not use any protection and wasn’t worried she would get pregnant as Cardinal ‘was kind of old’.
Spanish teacher and mother-of-three Shannon Cardinal, 43, is facing 186 years in prison for an alleged sexual relationship with a former student, aged 16
The 43-year-old mother-of-three was the teen’s Spanish teacher at Mayville High School in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin.
Prosecutors said mother of one Cardinal, a teacher for 10 years, began exchanging texts with the boy after he enrolled in her class during the fall of 2011.
The teen would spend his lunch hour with the teacher where they became closer.
The teen told police the texts were about work, but later developed into deeper conversations.
Court documents revealed that Cardinal would pick the boy up and drive to her home where they would have sex.
Cardinal’s two year old daughter was present one on occasion they slept together.
In March 2012 the 17-year-old moved to Iowa but the relationship continued.
Cardinal travelled to meet the teen and had sex with him while the parents were out of town.
The boy’s older sister became aware of the affair and told her parents.
During an interview with police the boy, now aged 17, said he did not use any protection he had sex and was not concerned Cardinal would get pregnant as she was ‘king of old.’
Prosecutors said the sex was consensual – but illegal.
‘We’re dealing with a situation that is known as consensual in fact, but not in law. And sometimes participants may not realize the significance of the conduct they are engaging in,’ said Fond du Lac County District Attorney Dan Kaminsky
The complaint says in spring of 2012, the two began to ‘text each other back and forth and that their relationship escalated from that point.’
Initially, the texts were about ‘school stuff and random events and then the texts progressed into talking about problems the two of them were having and deeper conversations.’
Cardinal is facing six charges of sex assault in Wisconsin. She could also be charged by authorities in Iowa.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of 186 years in jail.
Her next door neighbour said Cardinal was in the midst of a divorce and said she had three children.
Tracy Borchard said:’It’s very appalling. I’m concerned about the teens that are going to school and what’s going on with the teachers and the trust for our children.’
